How to make mince and dumplings

Mince and dumplings is a classic comfort meal that’s packed with warming flavour, ideal for a chilly autumn or winter’s day. Combining rich mince meat with light dumplings that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, it’s a sure-fire favourite, whether it’s a weeknight or something a little different for Sunday dinner.   • 500g beef mince
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 onion
  • 1 celery stick
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 500ml beef stock
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mixed herbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 100g self-raising flour
  • 60g suet
  • 70ml cold water

Method

  • Step 1

    Chop your onion, carrot and celery, then in a casserole dish, fry in a little oil for 10 minutes with the lid on.

  • Step 2

    Add your mince and fry uncovered for 10 minutes until cooked through

  • Step 3

    Add your garlic for 1 to 2 minutes before adding the chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce, beef stock and seasoning. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes

  • Step 4

    In a bowl, mix the self-raising flour and suet. Season with salt and pepper and mix

  • Step 5

    Make a well and pour in your water. Combine until a dough is made. Add more water if needed, but be careful not to add too much

  • Step 6

    Separate the dough into 10 to 12 dumplings. Add to your mince and cook for 20 minutes, until the dumplings are golden brown

    Can you make mince and dumplings in the slow cooker?

    Yes, it’s super-simple to make in a slow cooker. Brown the veg and mince in a frying pan, then transfer to the slow cooker with stock, tomatoes and seasoning. An hour before the end, add your dumplings and cook until golden brown.

    Can you freeze mince and dumplings?

    Yes, you can freeze for several months, however, the texture of the dumplings doesn’t usually hold up as well when heated through. You could always freeze your mince and make fresh dumplings, though.
